Following a report by a local news outlet about a significant security lapse involving the disappearance of an air rifle belonging to international shooter Adrian Karmakar, the firearm has now been located.
The Walther air rifle, which went missing from the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, was discovered in the same armoury where it was initially reported lost.
An official from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) confirmed the recovery on Wednesday, stating, “We visited the armoury today and began inspecting the stored weapons. We found Adrian’s rifle there,” the official remarked.
He speculated that Adrian might have overlooked his weapon when he initially reported it missing.
Interestingly, prior to this discovery, numerous individuals, including staff at the Dr Karni Singh Range, had thoroughly searched the area, including the Finals Range armoury. In fact, SAI had conducted searches in the hostel just the day before.
Joydeep Karmakar, Adrian’s father and a former Olympian who represented India in the 2012 Games and received the Arjuna Award, expressed his astonishment at the situation.
“I’ve been informed that the weapon was found in the armoury itself. While I’m relieved that my son’s air rifle has been recovered, it is somewhat surprising that it was located in the same place it was reported lost, especially after so many people searched that room!” he commented.
